Gentleman Jack (HBO)
Anna Lister (1791-1840) fue una terrateniente, escritora de diarios, alpinista y viajera de Yorkshire. Durante su vida escribió diarios que recogían su vida cotidiana, incluyendo sus relaciones lésbicas, sus preocupaciones financieras, sus actividades industriales y su trabajo como administradora. Sus diarios contienen más de 4,000,000 palabras y alrededor de un sexto de ellas—aquellas relativas a los detalles íntimos de sus relaciones románticas y sexuales—estaban cifradas. El código, derivado de una combinación de álgebra y griego antiguo, fue descifrado en la década de 1980. A Lister a menudo se le llama «la primera lesbiana moderna» por su evidente auto-conocimiento y su estilo de vida abiertamente lésbico. El cuento de la criada (HBO) y Alias Grace (Netflix)
Margaret Atwood (1939) es una comprometida ecologista y ferviente feminista dedicada en cuerpo y alma a la ciencia-ficción, la novela policíaca, la poesía y el relato corto. Para acercarse a su estilo intimista y conocer mejor a esta autora, lo mejor es adentrarse en algunas de sus obras clave, como El cuento de la criada (1985) o Alias Grace (2006).
La primera de las obras, El cuento de la criada (HBO), es una distopía muy particular que le sirve como reflejo del papel de la mujer en la sociedad actual.

Por su parte, Alias Grace (Netflix), se trata de una miniserie ambientada en el siglo XIX, la cual narra la historia de una muchacha desde su infancia hasta el momento de su condena a los dieciséis años por el asesinato de su señor en 1943. Margaret Atwood (Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las letras 2008) parte de un hecho real para internarse en los lugares más recónditos de la mente y trazar un vívido cuadro de la sociedad decimonónica, sus contradicciones y sus complejidades.
“I had high expectations for this book because it’s written by the highly esteemed Margaret Atwood. The writing itself is exceptional — Atwood brings the day-to-day life of nineteenth century Canada alive for the reader. Nevertheless, I felt that the promise of some kind of disclosure, or revelation, was dangled in front of the reader throughout the book, but in the end there is no real conclusion. This novel is roughly 50 percent historical fiction and 50 percent murder mystery, but most murder mysteries reach some sort of resolution, which this novel does not. I enjoyed the process of reading it, but I did not enjoy or find anything interesting or revealing about the ending.” -Customer review
Big Little Lies (HBO)
Es una miniserie estadounidense de comedia dramática basada en el libro homónimo publicado en 2014 por la australiana Liane Moriarty (1966), quien trabajó durante varios años en marketing y publicidad antes de dedicarse en exclusiva a la escritura.
En 2016 HBO comenzó con el rodaje de una adaptación para televisión de Pequeñas mentiras, con Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern o Alexander Skarsgard como protagonistas. La serie, de la cual pueden verse ya las dos primeras temporadas, cuenta la historia de tres madres que luchan diariamente contra sus problemáticas vidas. Las tres viven en Monterrey, un pueblo en el Norte de California, y un día sus vidas son sacudidas por un brutal asesinato que tiene lugar durante una gala benéfica que organiza la escuela primaria a la que asisten sus hijos.
“I rarely write reviews, but I have to for this book. It is just too good. It is not a mystery. You know someone dies. It is not a crime novel. It is a novel about women and people. There are three main characters, all mothers with kindergarten children in the same school. They are all so different, but so vividly portrayed in all their goodness and their flaws. You wish you knew them. The scene where the death actually occurs is so wonderfully written that I had to read it twice. Sounds odd, doesn’t it, but you will understand when you read it. The book is so clever and so witty. The characters are so interesting. I am going to watch the tv show but I don’t know how it can measure up to the book! Read this book!” – Customer review
